Today marks the founding anniversary of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city—a metropolis with a 186-year history. As a major hub home to nearly a quarter of the nation’s population, Auckland is also where approximately 70% of New Zealand’s ethnic Chinese community resides.
Thirty-six years ago, in February 1988, Auckland established a sister-city relationship with Guangzhou, China—a bond that has since flourished. It was during the celebrations of this partnership that New Zealand’s first-ever Dragon Boat Festival was launched, marking a wonderful chapter in cultural exchange between the two nations.
Now, in honor of this founding anniversary, a delegation of over 50 members from the Liede Dragon Boat Team in Guangzhou, Guangdong, has traveled across the ocean to participate in New Zealand’s dragon boat races. Their arrival adds a vibrant and spirited touch to Auckland’s birthday celebrations, further enriching the festive atmosphere.
We extend our gratitude to the Liede Dragon Boat Team for traveling such a great distance to join Auckland in celebrating this special day.
