June 30 was just another day for most people, but for Wakaaranga Primary School(the school may have bigger numbers of Cantonese/Chinese student in NZ), it was a double celebration — it had just been named one of NZ’s top 10 schools, and it was also turning 50.
The actual anniversary is in mid-July, but since that’s during the school holidays, they celebrated early. It was all low‑key — more like an open day with afternoon tea for past and present staff. No big donations, no fuss.
There may be a special touch that came from a parent (an artist whose work was collected by China’s National Art Museum before the 80s). He gave the school a painting featuring the three Norfolk pines, a Māori waka, and the school motto in both English and Chinese: "To Be the Best I can possibly be." The principal and board chair loved it.
What really stands out about this school isn’t just the academics — it’s the warm, giving vibe. At the tea, I spotted quite a few grey‑haired teachers who’ve been there for 10 or even 20 years, still going strong. Pretty amazing for a small school in a small country.
If 50 years already looks this good, I can’t wait to see the 100th! Online video link: https://weixin.qq.com/sph/AFJNkqI7V
